The new D.A.P. collar has been trialled at the Dogs Trust Re-homing Centres.
Many dogs are very distressed by their first experience in a kennel environment and it was shown that the use of a D.A.P.collar significantly reduced their stress levels. They were also impressed by the positive changes in dog behaviour that were shown in the trial. Dogs were far more relaxed and less reactive to the inevitable stressful elements of their environment. The Dogs Trust say they will be now using D.A.P. collars on all their dogs entering their centres.
Research had shown that dogs fitted with a D.A.P. collar spent less time pacing around their kennel, spent more time lying down and barked less frequent.
The D.A.P. collar study showed that fitting a collar to a dog during a stay in kennels promotes resting behaviours and reduced barking and excessive locomotion, proven to be important indicators of canine stress.
It is recommended that a D.A.P. collar should be fitted to the dog at least 24hrs before entry into the kennels and remain in place throughout their stay and after the dog comes home. The collar could be replaced every 4 weeks.
