affrican grey

23.03.2010

Hi I have just aquired a affrican grey parrot and thinking about having his wings cliped so he can sit out in the garden with us, Is this worth while if so how often would it be required?

tricky one this, to be truthful.

Wings are better off not being clipped as it is the pumping of the flapping the wings which helps prevent many respiratory conditions. (Plus, to minimise the parrot's stress, flying is to be highly recommended).

The ideal scenario is to construct a LARGE aviary in your garden to allow  flying with god intended wing feathers. However, this is not always feasible, and so ,if you do proceed with wing feather clipping, it will need to be repeated on average, every 3 months (depending on the stage of the moult when clipped).
